Through My Looking GlassSometimes we put up walls. Not to keep people out, but to see who cares enough to knock them down.

Goodbye Xanga, Hello New Blog!

My 21st birthday. Graduating college. Moving to NYC. All steps in my development, milestones that John is no longer dorkus, or the young john of the good ol' days. John is now an adult....ish.  As such, I am making another big step.

I am saying goodbye to Xanga. Forever. Nothing personal, it's just time to upgrade and move on.

But I've opened a new blog, subscribe!!: http://johnddufour.wordpress.com/

Thanks for the memories Xanga!

See ya at wordpress y'all!

Back to Basics

How did it become March already? I am eternally grateful for the upcoming semi-Spring Break I get next week, time to read Sandman, discover new flash games to beat, spend time with people - so random, my friend Julia from HIGH SCHOOL is in NYC too, and my friend from church is visiting next week, this world is mad small.  Oh yes, "mad" is the East Coast "hella", I've been adopting it since all my kids at work use it and no one knows how to respond when they hear "that's hella cool."

I dreamed last night that I was in prison with one of my kids from work, except the jail was on a sidewalk in downtown SF with no bars or anything, so I did my gang handshake with him, and packed my stuff up and ran home.

Most people who want to visit you in NYC actually want to visit NYC and use your apartment; you come second after the city, sorry - a difficult yet necessary pill to swallow if you ever live here.

For Lent I am giving up my time by sleeping at 11pm and getting up at 7am, allows me time to reflect/think/pray in the morning as well as letting my body heal after decades of physical and mental trauma from not enough rest.

I miss playing the piano, or having artistic reflections in meetings, or doing anything creative.  I think watching all this TV and reading these graphic novels is inspiring me to create, but so far all I have made is a groove in my bed and inflated my belly. Sad.  Maybe it's not inspiration, but shame at my lack of ability or talent to create like these people do.

Winter needs to end now!! If it were warmer I wouldn't feel so cooped up mentally and physically.

One of those days where I wish there were a personal reset button.

21 Friends (This Facebook Phenomenon is Unstoppable!!!)

At some point this FB note-posting frenzy must stop...but not until I've had my fill of answering pointless surveys for everyone else to read mwahahahahahahaahahah - It is a sign of how mundane my life feels right now that I get such pleasure from these

If you have been tagged in this, write the names down of the last 21 people that wrote on your wall (no repeats), and then answer the questions. After doing this, tag your 21 friends to do the same:
1) Gus G.
2) Ari M.
3) Tamra P.
4) Henry Y.
5) Lavan S.
6) Kyung K.
7) Diane B.
8) Carol L.
9) Luis M.
10) Lorraine L.
11) Nelson G.
12) Lana C.
13) Luke E.
14) Jane S.
15) Brian F.
16) Charissa J.
17) Brianna L.
18) Grace Y.
19) Meghan A.
20) Kris K.
21) Casey F.

How did you meet 7? Back at my home church, Cornerstone; I think officially it was the college group I visited before heading to Berkeley; she was super friendly and made me laugh a lot!

What would you do if you had never met 18? Never have a female Canadian friend...what would I have done!!! Or had someone to yell at during Taboo, well there were others, but she handled it like a professional.

What would you do if you dated 20? Uhhh.......feel really wrong.......srsly (no offense Kris hahahaha!), there are some things that even my twisted mind doesn't want to think about

Have you ever seen 17 cry? Yes. Roommate/BFF/Psychic Sister Confidentiality.

Describe 19: Has a commitment to the gym I have never seen before, very friendly and insightful, keeps class interesting for those long 10-hour days, and is very easily scared via webcams hahaha

Do you like 13? He gets me pretty well, so yeah - and sadly I think I get him too haha; all these years and my soul has only hardened just a lil bit hahaha, but he's pretty amazing so all in all, yes i do.

Do you think 21 is attractive? Hmm....how to put this lightly

When was the last time you talked to 9? In person, I think it was over winter break, he was so nice and drove me to the airport at 5 in the morning; we sat in the car waiting for it to warm up, and i cannot for the life of me remember what we talked about b/c it was too bloody early.

Have you ever seen a movie with 1? STAR TREK V, actually that whole night was hilarious, I ended up on the back of his bicycle flying down Univeristy Ave. in Berkeley praying to God Allmighty that we wouldn't spill out on the turns as I was precariously perched behind his back wheel - but all in all a great time - now we have a bro-date for the next Star Trek movie, WOOT!

Where does 15 live? P-town...sad to say I think I miss Pacifica sometimes...good place to get away from SF for a few hours and chillax

What is the best thing about 4? I really appreciate his loyalty; he's pretty smart and may be more a random-pop-culture-knowledge whore than me, but over all that I know he's pretty reliable and loyal to his word, really respect that.

What would you like to tell 10 right now? To figure out where we're going on Spring Break - and to give me props when she cures cancer and gets famous.

What is the best thing about 20? Every time I see her at church she says hi and says "YOUNG JOHN" - never gets old

Have you ever kissed 18? Hahahaha no, but if she had married me for the green card I guess that would have been part of the package.

What’s the best memory you have of 5? Going with him and some friends from our small group to Anna's wedding; we had to run around Chinatown looking for the right envelope to make sure he didn't curse her with bad-luck money, so fun!

When’s the next time you’re going to see 12? Hopefully when I go back to SF in May; when I came back in December she cashed in one like 1 of the 29084132741238947 drinks she owes me hahaahahahaha, but yeah hopefully then, we've got Whedon and food to gush about

Is 3 pretty? MUCH MORE so than 21

What was your first impression of 15? Hahaha, it was waaay back in high school when I was on my church's high school youth group band, and he had just joined us, I thought "wow this guy is young but he's pretty good - I wonder if all three of the brothers play together at home"....coulda been the Jonas brothers

How did you meet 2? NYU social work school - we actually met at orientation during welcome week and sat at a table listening people ask those questions that only apply to themselves and really don't need to be shared in a group setting, and now we're in 3 classes together and gchat all day about Crazy Sara and the Dynamic Duo...SW students are weird!!! (not us though, we eptiomize sanity)

Is 12 your friend? UHHH SHE BETTER BE. Laughing at Taylor's essay pretty much sums it up.

Have you seen 6 in the last month? No - but we've got a standing cheese steak run when I get back, plus at least one good summer blockbuster (any ideas??)

When was the last time you saw 16? Gosh, I think way back when I was at Cal...ok so like a year ago hahaha, but it was way back in the day!

Have you been to 9’s house? SO many times hahaha, the future in-laws have been good to me and my family . I think the first time I remember was crashing at his place to go to some church video shoot, and I went to sleep and woke up to the sound of his maniacal parrot squawking up a storm....that bird.....

When’s the next time you’ll see 10? IN THE BAHAMAS!!! OR FLORIDA!! Or wherever we end up in April....unless it doesn't work out and then I have to take the $15 bus to Boston to crash for a weekend

Are you really close to 7? Scrabulous battles bring everyone closer - definitely my most loyal competitor to date

Have you been to the movies with 11? Actually we haven't, we should change that!! Get the sg together for a movie night

Would you give 13 a hug? I always do!

Do you know a secret about 8? hee hee...remember that staff meeting where we shared secret things we had done...hee hee

Have you ever danced with 14? I think so! HAHA we did! After leading small group together for a year, we hosted an end-of-year dinner for our freshmen, and performed a song-and-dance remix of "Summer Lovin" to "Small Group Lovin" with the other leaders...the days of the long hair are long gone hahaha

How long have you known 3? I think since high school technically, although I dunno if it was "know" know or more of "oh I know that face at church"

Have you ever wanted to punch 17 in the face? OMG I live with her. What do you think? Hair in the drain....that's all I'm gonna say (j/k hahahaha!!), but I have learned to face conflict and let her know that I do not appreciate her dead skin in my showers or on the floor or the ceiling (i dont even wanna know how it got up there hahaha) - but it's all love.

How did you meet 10? Damn, one of my oldest friends, we "met" in middle school but didn't really start hanging out until high school, then went to college together, now we live on the same coast - it's good having someone consistent like her in my life, although I would say she is one of my more flighty friends, nothin but love!!

Have you traveled anywhere with 8? Hmmm, not "with" her specifically, but we've gone to conferences together in St. Louis, Yosemite...I would say I traveled college life with her (deep, soo deep)

If you gave 4 $100, what would they spend it on? Tithe. Then Steak. Easy.

What is your best memory of 15? Discipleship my intern year, always appreciated his ideas and reflections...fun guy to spend time with; that and jumping off that crazy hill at winter camp where Dan totally trashed his knee hahaha (sucks for Dan I guess)

Graydom

So about a month ago I found a gray hair on my head. Well actually Mark found it, and after my duress pulled it out for me.  I was faced with a 2-inch symbol of my impending unraveling, and I didn't like it.

But I got to thinking, and I realized - I think I am already an old man/woman. Sadly I think when you get older gender sort of disappears and you are left with a sage-like mind (minus the Alzheimer's) and an amorphous body (especially with my current diet). I love watching Game Show network; I'm pretty sure I could go on Wheel of Fortune and dominate without breaking a sweat. My idea of a fun Friday night is curled up in my apartment; the thought of "going out to the club" just annoys me now.  A day exercising is walking for 30 minutes in the park or playing with those 15-lb. weights in our living room. And most sad of all, I am completely fine with it all!

I wonder if maybe I'm growing up too fast - of course I have the behavioral level and diet of an 8-year-old, but I wonder if my mind is beating my body to the finish line.  If I am like this at 23, what's going to happen at 30? 40? When I am legally old??

I should say yes to things more, keep it all spicy fresh.

I've been having the travel itch again, needing to get out and explore some more - London is actually pretty close by, so are the Bahamas.

Florida is there too. Fitting.
